Good cafes can be found pretty much everywhere. They open late, often have table outside and are usually relaxed, informal places to meet. They range from elegant mansions to former anarchist hangouts, but most are now well designed, trendy places to see and be seen. Berliners recommend the following:
Strandbad Mitte Kleine Hamburger Str. 16, S-1/25 Oranienburger Str. or U-8 Weinmeister
Str., Café Aedes West
Café Aedes East The garden cafés along the Paul-Lincke-Ufer ("Ufer"
means riverbank) are some of the nicest places to be when the weather
is nice. In spring and summer the terraces are very popular. All the
cafés serve a wide variety of breakfasts and most of them are
also restaurants serving lunch and evening meals.) Café am Ufer, Paul Lincke-Ufer 42/43, Tel. 612 18 27, open from
10:00
Anita Wronski belongs to a group of really nice, trendy cafes around
the Wasserturm. The simple interior and the different light browns and
yellows were carefully chosen to give a welcoming feel to the pub. It
is always full in the evenings, even the terrace gets crowded during
the summer. Tel. 442 84 83, opens at 10:00, daily
Café Berio, just a few steps away from Winterfeldplatz,
is located on the sunny-side of the street and, as a result, reminds
you of a Parisian boulevard. They have a good choice of cakes for the
obligatory afternoon coffee ritual and it has become a very popular
place to meet. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, when the open-air market
is on, it's almost impossible to find an empty chair. Tel. 216 19 46, open 8:00- 1:00 daily
Café Einstein, is renowned in Berlin. It is an elegant
Viennese café and exclusive restaurant all housed in a 1920's
villa. The waiters and waitresses are dressed in black and white aprons
and many guests are well known in the cultural movers and shakers. There
is a lovely covered terrace at the back and an interesting 'daad gallery'
upstairs. Don't miss an opportunity to visit this celebrated Berlin
institution. Tel. 261 50 96, Open 10:00 - 2:00, daily
Café im Literaturhaus - also called: Café Wintergarten
- is located in a turn-of-the-century villa in elegant Fasanenstraße.
Recommended for its literary events but also good for business lunches.
Open 10:00 -24.00
Café Kranzler, is Berlin's most famous café. It's
a bit touristy, but its odd 50's-style design makes it interesting and
it is one of the few places that allows you to sit in the middle of
the busy Ku'damm. Open 8:00- 24:00, daily Café November, is the best café on the lovely
Husemannstrasse. This old pub has been very tastefully renovated using
light brown and dark blue colours on the walls as well as a lot of light-coloured
wood. The black star in the pub's logo is a subtle reminder of the days
of socialism. The atmosphere here is casual with trendy music. A lot
of people spend their summer afternoons and evenings at the long outdoor
tables in front of the pub.
Café Orange is one of the more elegant places on Oranienburger
Straße. If you appreciate high ceilings and a lot of stucco and
wood, this is the place to be. You can order snacks and have philosophical
discussions. In summer you can also sit outside on bustling Oranienburger
Straße.
Café Savigny is an unassuming, stylish café with
a varied crowd. Depending on the time of day, or night, you may find
yourself in the middle of the media, fashion or architectural crowd.
The timeless interior has classics like Thonet café chairs and
there is a very relaxed atmosphere. In summer, there is also seating
on the pavement. A nice place to be.
Café Sidney is located opposite Winterfeldtplatz. Lots
of people who visit the open-air market at the weekend drop in to have
a café au lait. On Saturdays during the summer you might find
yourself hanging around for a while to get a table outside. It gets
very busy.
Schwarzes Café was a Berlin icon, as it was a typical
example of the alternative German 'scene' in 1968. Nowadays breakfast
is served round-the-clock for a reasonable price for this part of town.
There is a small garden at the back and a picturesque little balcony
facing the street. For weary travellers or locals, it's just a few minutes
away from the Zoo train station.
Other areas: It is also worth making a detour for the Viktoria-Luise-Platz and Ludwig-Kirch-Platz located south of the Ku'damm. These are peaceful places to relax and watch the water fountains, or sit indoors in of the nearby cafés reading the newspaper |
